Christmas Program 2010

Well done grade six!   The Christmas concert was a hit!  You all deserve a pat on the back - the concert pieces you performed were great - especially considering that you've only been playing your instruments for a few months!

6V Read-In

Due to a snow day the previous Thursday, 6V enjoyed some reading time on Tuesday.  To help raise money for Heidi, our sponsor student in Honduras, students could also enjoy some yummy hot chocolate.

Remembrance Day Chapel

Mr. Hanlon led the middle campus chapel this morning. He challenged us all to take some time to truly reflect on the sacrifices that have been made in the past and to be grateful for the freedom we enjoy today. We all went outside and stood for a minute of silence and listened to Kaitlyn play The Last Post on the trumpet.

6B - Week of November 8 - 12 UPDATE

In addition to what the post below on this week states, 6B will also be having a quiz on the history of India. The post below can help the students study for the test. The focus is not so much on memorizing dates and names, but rather on understanding and explaining the "why" questions.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Remembrance Day 2010

A NEED FOR SILENCE
No different now than years gone by
For freedom, still our soldiers die
So we can live.
Risking safety once again today
Enemies encountered on the way
To a successful mission.
Road side bombs; bullets flying
Hear their screams; hear the crying
Of those we love.
Helicopters swirl desert sand
Rescuing yet another man
Whose life is threatened.
Flags we fly and poppies wear
Emotions held, we now can bare
Just how we feel.
So many wars; so many lost
Left alone we wear the cost
A poppy red.
They gave their lives to defend
Say a prayer for it to end
And always, REMEMBER.

Super Day at Stave Falls Powerhouse

Our learning today took place away from the classroom.  We took a tour at the Stave Falls Powerhouse in Mission which included exploration time in the hands on activity centre.  We also watched a 10 minute DVD presentation all about rain and how important it is to us here in B.C.  The tour was very informative, and it was interesting to see turbines, penstocks and a dam close up.  After our tour was over, we walked over the picnic area and had our lunch in the gazebo.  Small groups played football, soccer and Frisbee in the nearby field.  It was a great day!

6V and 2B Bake 46 Pies for the Union Gospel Mission

The annual 6V and 2B buddy pie baking event took place last week.  A total of 46 apple pies were made and delivered to the Union Gospel Mission.  Thank you to everyone who helped make this service project such a huge success!

Derby Reach

A huge thank you to the parents who accompanied the grade sixes to Derby Reach Regional Park last month.  The weather was wet when we arrived, but cleared up as we came back from the hike.  We feasted on yummy hotdogs, enjoyed spending time with each other and in God's glorious creation.

Just a reminder that the grade sixes are heading to the Stave Falls Powerhouse on Tuesday, October 12.  Please be sure to come prepared for fall weather, as we will be spending some time outside.  This is an all day field trip.  If you want to learn more, check out the link below.

Grade 6 updates

Derby Reach:
-It is still a go! We recognize the forecast is "cloudy with showers", but we live on the West coast. This is nothing we can't handle.
-Students will need to bring a: snack, drink, weather appropriate clothing
-A hot dog lunch will be provided there.

Stave Falls Field Trip booked - October 12
-This is an all day field trip. We need 2 parent volunteers per class. We will be taking a bus, so no drivers are needed.

PE strip is on back order
-students who are still waiting must have other clothes to change into for PE time.

Any parents interested in earing service hours from home?
There is some "light" marking that could be sent home. If this sounds like something you are interested in, contact your child's teacher.

Short But Sweet

What a great start to the new school year!  Boy did time ever fly by quickly!  There's so much to talk about - hopefully, it wasn't too overwhelming!  We'll pick up where we left off tomorrow.

A huge SCS welcome to our new students.  May God richly bless you in your new school.  Our prayer is that you will feel at home here quickly, and that you will make many new friends along the way.

We have a few reminders as we start off this new school year...

Please bring:
  1. Your Adventure Bible (new students will receive a Bible from the school)
  2. Non-marking indoor shoes - suitable for P.E.
  3. A subject binder (preferably 1" or 1 1/2")
  4. Your band instrument (new students need not worry about this just yet)
  5. P.E. strip order forms (samples are available outside the middle school office for sizing purposes)
